[ Editor's disclaimer: I am paid by both Deep Web Technologies and by the DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) for various projects. ]
On Wednesday, Deep Web Technologies was named Small Business Innovation Research small business of the year by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). (There’s a press release regarding the award here.) In order to receive the prestigious award, Deep Web had to provide a song and slide show; a small snippet of the song plus the slide show was played at the ceremony.
Can you guess what song Deep Web chose?
Darcy Pedersen, who runs marketing for Deep Web chose the Beatle’s “Searchin’.” Clever, huh?
Word got out about this selection to DOE OSTI’s director, Dr. Walt Warnick, who promptly pointed out that there was another apropos song, “Keep Searching (We’ll Follow the Sun)” by Del Shannon.
Well, Deep Web stuck with “Searchin’” for the award ceremony. I got the idea of writing a parody of “Searchin’” but learned that Dr. Warnick had already written a parody of “Keep Searching.” So, I got (another) idea. Publish Dr. Warnick’s parody of his song and see if I could entice blog readers to write a parody of ours.
I’ll send silly prizes of marginal value to those of you who send in good parodies of “Keep Searchin’” or any “Searching” type song with cool “searchin’” words juxtaposed. Your parody words should have something to do with federated search. This is not a very serious contest, unlike the very serious “predict the future of federated search” writing contest.
Without further ado, and with Dr. Warnick’s permission, here’s his brainchild:
Researchers understand what they’ve gotta do
They’ve gotta find where data hide with OSTI as their guideThey’re so overworked, time constraints are cruel
Nature holds her secrets tight, there’s only one thing left they can doThey’ve gotta keep searchin’, searchin’, lookin’ WorldWide
Searchin’, searchin’, from where they reside
They’ll get the science done, it’s gonna be fun, wee-ooh
it’s gonna be fun, wee-oohBRIDGE:
Doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter what people can pay
It’s ours so its all for free anywayGotta keep searchin’, searchin’, for a better way
Searchin’, searchin’, it’s a brand new day
They’ll get the science done, it’s gonna be fun, wee-ooh
it’s gonna be fun, wee-ooh
LEAD BREAKThey’ve gotta keep searchin’, searchin’, lookin’ WorldWide
Searchin’, searchin’, from where they reside
They’ll get the science done, it’s gonna be fun, wee-ooh
it’s gonna be fun, wee-oohFollow the sun-ah, Follow the sun-ah, Follow the sun
