Sol:
I am very glad that in the course of thinking about your blog post you came around to recognizing that you too are playing the SEO game, albeit in a different guise perhaps! As you correctly state, even the ivory-tower-dwelling denizens of academia deign to stoop for a few links now and then!

Let's be honest here. Federated search wants its product to be found as much as the next person. (Otherwise there wouldn't be any "search" involved). It's just that there is a tendency among academics and intellectuals to feel their product rises above the product of the unwashed masses, and should be promoted in a more refined way, rather than using that yucky, messy, tawdry, SEO stuff. Hey, we're not Viagra, man!

There's a good old-fashioned word for that kind of attitude. Snobbery. And it's not a very attractive trait. It's great to see you dealing with that in your post, and rising above it.

Great article. Though I don't have much link juice to share, I'll definitely RT and bookmark.

As I recall, didn't AllTheWeb.com start this phenomenon? Furthermore, with the implementation of Rich Snippets (reviews and so forth) http://su.pr/2mSQ79 many developers will now be able to gain control of where and how content is displayed.

Add real-time search (plus alert and respond actions) to the Federated Search model and you can basically create your own search experience from your desktop app.

Very exciting times in the search realm. Thanks Eric and Sol!

Thank you for the great post. While I am one of 'those' in the SEO field Eric Ward has a love/hate relationship with, I wholeheartedly agree with his comment regarding link building, content and natural rankings.

Eric. I'm happy to hear your perspective as I also have a love/hate relationship with links for SEO. I've not ever focused on link building for this blog but I like to think that I've earned the links I've gotten. But, you've got me thinking that there could be a definite value in link building toward the goal of getting this blog's content and this blog's sponsor more exposed to those who could benefit from the information.

I've been link building since before there were search engines that analyzed links (1994). I've never thought of link bulding as an SEO activity, and have a love/hate relationship with the whole links for SEO field. Link building is more of a public relations activity, and I limit my work to only those with truly meritorious content. Federated link building is not at all about SEO for me. It's about making sure the best content is known by and included in the best vertical deep web engines and databases. I use an etiologic merit based process, and don't worry about Google rankings, because if you link build the right way on behalf of highest quality content, high Google rankings are a natural and welcomed side effect.
